Legislative Process

The Legislative process is key in having a direct impact on your loved one’s life. YOU can get in touch with your local lawmakers to get the legislative process started. Here are the basic steps that a bill goes through…

  1. Representative sponsors a bill
  2. Bill is assigned to a senate committee, which further evaluates the issue and makes recommendations. This can be through hearings and modifications of the bill
  3. If bill is released by senate committee, it’s voted on and when passed by simple majority, it’s sent to the senate and reassigned to a different committee.
  4. Same evaluating and voting process takes place
  5. If passed by simple majority, House and Senate come together to make any final modifications and give final approval
  6. Bill is sent to the executive branch where the president has ten days to sign or veto the bill

Before starting the legislative process, it is important to make sure you are registered to vote because the president in office makes the final decision on whether or not the bill gets passed.
